KALARIPPAYATTU is the system of physical culture and self defence. It is the ancient art of Kerala, the history of Kerala is the history of KALARIPPAYATTU. It is believed that Lord Parasurama is the creator of the system. He was an incarnation of Lord Mahavishnu.

We can see the influence of Kalarippayattu in the ancient arts like Kathakali, Kolkali, Theyyam poorakkali, etc.

The peculiarity of a student of Kalarippayattu is self control. He has a fearless and confidential stand which helps him to face the enemy and to defend himself. The student also becomes an adept at unarmed combat.

In olden days the rulers of Kerala encouraged the growth and popularization of Kalarippayattu. It was given the same priority as the learning of reading and writing.

Even today Kalarippayattu is practiced in a traditional style inside a Kalari under the strict supervision and guidance of GURUKKAL.
