Centre for Indian Medical Heritage (CIMH)

The medicinal Plant garden adjacent to the AVP factory at Kanjikode is managed by CIMH, an NGO initiative of the AVP Group.

The main activity of CIMH is conservation of medicinal plants and it has been serving in this field for the last 14 years.

CIMH also conducts training for college and school going students to create awareness about medicinal plants.

It conducts medical camps and awareness programs to promote use of herbs for primary health care.

CIMH is also involved in cultivation of medicinal plants.

CIMH has a 1200 sq ft training hall, ethno medicinal forest and Herb, Seed and Raw Drug Collection Centre in its 6.25 acre campus.

About 286 species of medicinal plants are grown in the medicinal garden maintained by CIMH.

Saplings of 180 medicinal plants are grown and distributed as part of the effort to conserve medicinal plants.

Botanists and other scientists are involved in the activities of CIMH.

CIMH is registered under Tamilnadu act No. Regn. No.62/1996 functioning at its registered office at Coimbatore ad its activities at AVP Campus near Kanjikode Railway Station.

CIMH has 14 acres of herbal garden in which it is maintaining a medicinal plant conservation park having good number of plants. It is having a nursery for propogation studies and for raising sapling. CIMH has been promoting kitchen herbal garden in Puthussery Panchayath for the last 6 years. The nursery has a full time Botanist guided by a Senior Taxonomist as advisor, a Rtd.Professor from Victoria college,Palakkad

CIMH conducted workshop / Exhibition / Village level meeting / awareness compaign / School / College level programmes / Training programmes for NGO and Govt. Department like Forest Dept, Agricultural Dept ,etc.


A14 are well established herbal garden with stored water facility conserving 500 species of medicinal plants. It is a well defined ethno medical forest.

Two green houses which house endangered, rare species for demonstration and training.

Good collection of seeds and Herbarium

Full fledged nursery developing 100 wild plants to naturalise in the exsitu-conservation programme. A demonstration garden with different themes related to ISM and LHT. A 2000 Sq.feet training centere building and guest house to give training to 30 people at a time with basic audio visual support and a museum of HSRD.

500 Sq.ft office also housing computer data base centere and administration.

400 Sq.ft clinic cum model processing unit with all accessories.

Two 2 wheelers to help in field visits, data collection etc.

Apart from this a 2000 Sq.feet area is available for training and demonstration at Coimbatore.


One Senior Botanist (Retd. Professor ) as consultant visiting every day to guide the activities

1 well trained & experienced Ayurvedic physician to take up the training program with experience in coordinating medicinal plant conservation park project working in CIMH since 7 years.

2 full time Botanists who are well trained in medicinal plant related aspects and working in CIMH since 7 years

Agricultural scientists getting appointed to guide in agriculture related activities
2 farmers who are specialized in medicinal plant cultivation and are sourcing out medicinal plant, for identification and collection of rare species.

Supportive staffs of social workers with 10 years experience in community income generation programme and micro credit schemes to decimate information to the community.

15 women animators well trained and motivated in village level training programme

Supportive administrative staff and fully computerized working environment.

Medicinal plants forest:
The forest has been developed with raising of many rare and endangered species of medicinal plants which are used in the folk/traditional medical systems.

Research & Development Division

Collected and documented 300 species of Palghat district as herbariums and identified its usage.
Collected 400 dry specimens and seeds of medicinal species.

Education materials
Developed proto-type of education materials.

Survey & Documentation
Survey and documented LHT practices of traditional vaidyas of palghat district

Community Division
Conducted monthly training programmes for village women in 24 villages of the Puthussery Panchayat based on a selected syllabus and for village women in other neighboring villages in Palghat district.Conducted 42 exhibitions to create awareness among public on conservation and use of medicinal plants.
Initiated self sustainable activities among villagers through kitchen herbal garden, saving schemes, nursery raising etc.,
School programmes to bring awareness abot medicinal plants done in 38 schools.
Conducting training programmes to rural women under the Reproductive child health programme of Dept. H & FW, Govt. of India.
CIMH is approved by NBPGR and has been selected as a cooperating institute (NGO) from Kerala for National Agro Technology Project on Plant Bio diversity.

Health Care Division
Daily free medical consultation is available at the centre. Preventive, promotive and curative aspects of the medicinal plants imparted to patients.
One medical camp is organized once in every two months in remote villages.
A semi-processing unit of herbal medicine is functioning at the Centre to support providing medicines to patients.
Helping the needy in getting genuine herbs for medication.

Publication Division:
A booklet entitled Otta moolikal a booklet on single drugs is ready in the regional language (Malayalam) and is published.

Herbal kits are prepared & demonstrated at various places. These are sold to generate income to the centre.

Having a good collection of Medicinal plants and its conservation both for reference and for sale collected from different sources.

Good collection of Herbarium and photos and seeds for exhibition and reference to students

Having a good library of more than 500 rare books for the reference of the students and the public.

Many pamphlets and education materials on Nursery Technique, Cultivation guidelines ,Propagation and conservation of plants.
